Alleged Westmount cat burglar suspected in about 20 break-and-enter thefts

Montreal police (SPVM) have arrested a man in connection with around 20 break-and-enter robberies in the Westmount area, many of which allegedly occurred when residents were at home.

Police say the alleged crimes were committed at night between April and August of this year.

“The suspect allegedly gained access to the targeted residences by forcing windows or doors that were not already open or unlocked,” the SPVM said in a news release. “Once inside, he would quickly steal accessories, bank cards, or cash before fleeing. In most cases, the occupants of the residences were at home at the time of the incidents.”

Gheorghita Onisei, 57, was arrested in the act on Aug. 14, police added, and officers gathered various pieces of evidence that have linked him to almost two dozen other crimes.

Onisei appeared in court and is facing over 20 charges that include breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods.
