Emotional funeral for girl struck by car in Laval

It was an emotional day for family and friends at Maeva Dure's funeral.

Friends and relatives of Maeva Dure said their last goodbyes Saturday morning to the girl who was killed on a Laval street two weeks ago.

More than 100 people gathered at St. Angele Parish in St-Leonard in Montreal for the seven-year-old’s funeral.

People who knew the girl’s family came to offer their support during the emotional ceremony, where white doves were released into the sky in remembrance of the girl's life.

Maeva Dure leaves behind her parents, three brothers and a sisterr. Dure was with her father, grandmother and brothers when the tragedy occurred.

On March 12, the family was leaving a birthday party and walked single file along Levesque St. Place des Hirondelles when the girl was struck by a 19-year-old driver.

Police have determined the driver was not speeding and alcohol was not a factor. No charges will be laid.

Local residents have called for increased security, including lowering the speed limit, adding sidewalks and better lighting on that stretch of road they say is dangerous.
