Car crashes into building next to daycare, no children injured: Longueuil police

Police on Montreal’s South Shore say no children were injured after a car crashed into a commercial building next to a daycare Friday afternoon.

The crash happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. in Brossard. A photo shared by police on social media shows the car inside the Lilly Vogue women’s clothing store with shattered glass on the sidewalk.

According to police, the impact caused damage to the store and a shared wall with the Garderie Bricole-Age, which are located in a plaza on Grande Allée. The daycare was evacuated as a precaution.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 80s, “accidentally” crashed into the building, according to police. She and another woman in her 80s, who was a customer inside the clothing store, were sent to hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

A mother said her daughter was inside the daycare waking up from a nap in another room when the crash happened, and that she rushed to collect her as soon as she got a call from staff.

The woman, whom CTV News is not naming to protect her daughter’s identity, said getting the phone call immediately brought back memories of the tragedy in Laval in 2023 when a bus crashed into a daycare, killing two children.

“With what happened in Laval, we didn’t have any details. It seems to be an accident. It was scary,” she said.

“The daycare was amazing, the personnel was fantastic and they must be going through a lot,” she added. “I’m just happy everybody is safe. It could have been a real tragedy.”

Police said a structural assessment will be done to ensure the safety of the building that was struck.
