Sochi 2014: 5 viral moments from Olympics' early days

The Sochi Games have just started, but they're already providing the Internet with an abundance of 'viral fodder.' From the now-infamous #SochiProblems to Canada's Dufour-Lapointe sisters, here's a look at five memorable moments from the first four days of the Sochi Olympics.

1. Canadian coach comes to rescue of Russian cross-country skier

How’s this for Olympic spirit?

When Russian cross-country skier Anton Gafarov took a tumble during the semi-finals of the men’s freestyle sprint event on Tuesday, he broke one of his skis.

Not wanting to call it quits on his home turf, Gafarov got up and attempted to finish the race on one ski -- even though his chances of advancing to the finals were shot.

Then, seconds later, a man rushed onto the course with a replacement ski in tow. Who was it?

Team Canada’s own cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth, who even dropped to the ground and helped affix the ski to Gafarov’s boot.

Although the Russian skier finished in distant last, the crowd at the finish line burst into cheers as he completed the course.

Many have mentioned that Wadsworth’s move is reminiscent of an act of exemplary sportsmanship shown eight years ago under eerily similar circumstances.

During the 2006 Games in Turin, Canadian cross-country Sara Renner was competing in the women’s team sprint final when she broke a pole. Coming to her rescue was Norway’s coach, who tossed her his own team’s spare.

Renner and her partner, Beckie Scott, went onto to take the silver medal. The Norwegian team finished in fourth.

The kicker? Beckie Scott happens to be Wadsworth’s wife.

2. Johnny Quinn's #SochiProblems

Journalists have written extensively about the problems they've encountered with their lodgings in Sochi, but U.S. Olympic bobsledder Johnny Quinn proved that athletes aren’t immune from the perils of questionable construction either.

Quinn became an Internet sensation over the weekend after he accidentally got locked in his hotel room washroom.

With no phone to contact someone for help, the Olympian – who is also a former CFL and NFL player – resorted to some desperate measures to free himself.

The photo of Quinn's washroom door in ruins became a viral hit, with Quinn doing multiple media interviews describing his ordeal.

But that wasn't the end of his problems. On Monday, he found himself stuck again, this time with no easy way out.

3. Defending mogul champ Bilodeau’s golden embrace

Reigning Olympic champion Alexandre Bilodeau won gold in Sochi on Monday in the men's freestyle moguls event, with teammate Mikael Kingsbury taking silver.

Right after his victory, Bilodeau embraced his brother Frederic in a long hug.

It was a familiar scene to those who remember Bilodeau's gold medal win at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Bilodeau's brother has cerebral palsy, and the Olympian dedicated his Vancouver medal to him.

He calls Frederic his hero and his biggest inspiration. "I have a family, a great girlfriend, a team of trainers, but the person who motivates me to go through the highs and lows is my brother," Bilodeau said.

4. Russian speed skater unzips after win

Russian speed skater Olga Graf won Russia's first medal of the Games on Sunday, but it's what she did next that attracted attention online.

After Graf finished the race, winning a bronze medal for Russia, she threw her hands up in the air in front of an ecstatic crowd. Then, she began to unzip her speed skating suit – a skin-tight white one piece – apparently forgetting that she was wearing nothing underneath. Graf unzipped to just above her navel before realizing her error.

She later told The Associated Press that she had totally forgotten she was wearing nothing underneath and just wanted to take off her suit and breathe. She said she only remembered when she realized the video might appear on YouTube. "But I don't think it will be so bad," she added.

5. Sister act: Dufour-Lapointe siblings win medals and hearts

A heart-warming moment emerged early on in the Games, when Canadian sisters Justine Dufour-Lapointe and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe won gold and silver medals respectively in the women's freestyle moguls event this weekend.

The Dufour-Lapointe family is a remarkable one, with Justine, Chloe and their eldest sister Maxime, all competing in the same event. (Maxime finished in twelfth place.)

This incredible photo of Justine and Chloe holding hands and smiling at each other before stepping onto the podium perfectly captures some of the emotions they must have been feeling to be able to share this Olympic moment together. Chloe later told reporters that it was one of the best moments of her life.

To make the win even sweeter, sister Maxime was in the stands cheering on her younger siblings.
