Meet 7 Canadian Olympians with day jobs you might not believe

Canada's winter athletes have been enjoying the national and international spotlight since the Sochi Olympics began. Their faces have been splashed across the front pages of newspapers, and their victories have made the top stories on national newscasts.

But the reality is that when some of Canada's biggest Olympic stars aren't competing, they're slogging through the daily nine to five grind at work just like everyone else. Even the athletes who do get funding often have to pick up part-time work to pay the bills.

Here's a look at some Canadian Olympians with surprising occupations:

The 39-year-old Manitoba native led her team to the gold medal on Thursday. But when Jones isn't at the curling rink, she's working as a corporate lawyer. She's a partner at Golden Girls Finance Inc., a financial consulting firm targeted towards women, and works as a senior legal advisor for National Bank.

When the 33-year-old isn't plunging face first down an icy track, he's carrying mail for Canada Post. Neilson finished 13th in the skeleton at the Sochi Games.

The 26-year-old snowboarder operates a division of his father's company, Stoney Links, which specializes in European-style stone work.

The skip for Canada's men's curling team has shown he's one of the best in the world. And when he's not competing for curling's biggest prize, Jacobs works as an accounts manager at RBC.

Before she became an Olympic medalist, winning silver in Sochi and Bronze in Turin, Maltais worked as a fulltime firefighter. She's been forced to stop working several times to focus on her training, but the 33-year-old said before the Sochi Games that she plans to return to the fire hall as she transitions out of snowboarding.

The 22-year-old serves up fine food at her family's Swiss-Italian restaurant in Banff, and also works occasionally as a housekeeper at Mt. Assiniboine Lodge.

The veteran of the Canadian team won gold again in Sochi, her fourth since 2002. But while she's shown remarkable skill as a player, she has also made a name for herself as coach. Oullette has held assistant coaching jobs with the University of Minnesota Duluth, the Women's national Under-18 team, and recently took an assistant's job with the Concordia Stingers women's hockey team.
