Police in Vancouver are warning anyone planning to fly a drone in the city during the FIFA World Cup about event-specific airspace restrictions. Between June 11 and July 19, flying a drone of any size will be prohibited above BC Place, the PNE, Killarney Park and the University of British Columbia. “Drones of any size will not be permitted within designated no-fly zones around these venues,” an online statement from the department said. “Penalties can include significant fines, the seizure of your drone, and criminal charges.” While flying a drone in a no-fly zone is not a crime in and of itself, criminal charges for things like harassment, causing a public nuisance, recklessness, and public endangerment are among those that can be laid, according to the VPD’s website. According to Transport Canada, individuals can face fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, and financial penalties for corporations are between $5,000 and $25,000. “If you break more than one rule, you could receive multiple penalties,” the agency’s website notes.
