A 57-year-old man faces impaired driving charges after a pickup truck struck a light pole Wednesday night, knocking it into the roadway and blocking all lanes of Stone Road East in Guelph, Ont. Guelph police say they responded to the intersection of Stone Road East and Victoria Road South at around 9:30 p.m. following reports of a single-vehicle collision. Officers arrived to find a light pole lying across the street. A witness told police a pickup truck had been tailgating their vehicle before passing at a high rate of speed and hitting the pole. Police say they found the damaged truck near the scene and arrested the driver after observing signs of impairment. Breath tests conducted at the station showed the driver had more than double the legal limit of alcohol in his system, police said. The Guelph man has been charged with operation while impaired, operation while impaired with a blood-alcohol concentration over 80 mg, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
