The Red Lake detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is investigating a suspicious death that was discovered Sept. 30 in Pikangikum First Nation. Just after 8 p.m., Pikangikum Peacekeepers along with OPP officers were dispatched to a residence in Pikangikum First Nation, where one person was located deceased. No broader threat “Investigators believe this is an isolated incident with no indication of a broader threat,” the OPP said in a news release Oct. 2. “Residents of Pikangikum First Nation can expect to see an increased police presence as the investigation continues.” The Red Lake OPP and the OPP northwest region crime units in Red Lake and Sioux Lookout are conducting the investigation under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. Assistance is being provided by the OPP’s regional support Team, provincial liaison team, major case investigation team and Forensic Identification Services.
