Sculpture to be temporarily removed from Brantford’s Sports Hall Fame

A familiar statue will be temporarily removed from the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition.

The statue depicting a young girl tying up her skates is known as the ‘Welcome Sculpture,’ and was originally donated by Brant Mutal Insurance in 2013.

Since then, the rigors of time have wreaked havoc on the figure, causing significant structural damage.

In a news release, the City of Brantford said other statues are typically made of clay and dipped in bronze. But the Welcome Sculpture was made from composite materials, such as fiberglass, Bondo and paint.

Although there is a sign warning people not to lean or climb on the statue, it has been damaged over the years. The city notes the damage can not be attributed to one specific incident.

The conservation efforts will be paid for by Paul Aucoin. The statue will be removed on Tuesday and restored by an accredited conservator from Conservation of Sculptures, Monuments & Objects.
