Multiple reports of taxi scam in Waterloo’s University District

People in Waterloo are being urged to be wary of anyone asking for help paying their taxi fare.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said they received several reports about potential fraud attempts in the University District on Tuesday.

In each case, a woman inside a vehicle called out to the victim and asked for help paying for a taxi ride. She said the driver would not let her use cash to pay, and promised to reimburse the victim if they paid for the taxi using a debit card.

During the transactions, the victim’s card was swapped and later used to make unauthorized purchases.
