Ontario Provincial Police are asking the public not to share misinformation about a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy. The teen was struck by a minivan on Wellington Road 29, outside of Fergus, just after midnight on Sept. 19. He was only identified as a resident of Puslinch Township. According to OPP, a group of people were near the road at the time of the crash. “I don’t want to say party because I don’t know exactly what the gathering was for or how many people were in attendance,” Const. Craig Soldan said on Sept. 19. “I don’t believe that this individual was walking from point A to point B. I think they were in the area with the group and, for some reason, on the roadway.” Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up the crash but are urging the public to be careful about what they post online. “The Wellington County OPP recognizes that this incident has deeply affected the community,” they wrote in a media release. “Members of the public are urged to be cautious when sharing or posting unverified information, photos or videos related to this incident as it can contribute to misinformation, unnecessary concern within the community and potentially affect the ongoing investigation. As the investigation continues, police urge the public to avoid speculation and rely on information released through official channels.” Anyone who has information that can help investigators is asked to contact Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
