Major downtown construction project begins in Brantford this week

People driving through downtown Brantford may need to start leaving a little earlier due to a major construction project.

The City of Brantford is launching Phase 1 of a downtown revitalization initiative this week. The work will take months – the first phase of the work isn’t expected to wrap up until the end of August 2026.

Several streets will be impacted, including:

• Brant Avenue between Colborne Street and Dalhousie Street
• Colborne Street between Brant Avenue and King Street
• Dalhousie Street between Brant Avenue and Bridge Street
• Icomm Drive between Colborne Street and Clarence Street South
• Hill Street between Icomm Drive and Water Street

Brant Avenue and Icomm Drive will be reduced to a single southbound/eastbound lane during construction and there may be times when full closures are required while crews move through the area. Some detour routes have been put in place to try to ease congestion.

The city urges people to continue visiting downtown shops. They said they will try to keep sidewalks and storefront entryways open whenever possible.

The construction work includes upgrading sidewalks, roadways and underground services.
