A common scam has once again reared its head in southern Ontario. The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police said they were called about an attempted fraud in Erin on July 22 around 10 a.m. They were told two suspects contacted the victim. One person posed as the victim’s son and said they had been arrested by police after a crash. The second suspect claimed to be a lawyer, and told the Erin resident that they had to pay $6,500 in bail so police could release their son. Instead of handing over any money, the victim called their son directly and confirmed the story was fake. The next day, police were called to another attempted fraud around 2:30 p.m. in Arthur. The intended victim told a very similar story, except one of the suspects pretended to be the victim’s grandson and said he had been in a crash. The “lawyer” in that case asked for $2,600 in bail money and told the victim not to tell anyone what the money was for. Suspicious, the victim reached out to police before any cash changed hands.
