New safety measures will be installed in a Manitoba provincial park where two boys drowned earlier this month. Environment and Climate Change Minister Mike Moyes announced Tuesday that the government will be putting in the new measures at Sturgeon Falls Trail in Whiteshell Provincial Park. “These safety measures will help ensure no other family has to suffer a tragic loss,” Moyes said in a news release. This news comes following the deaths of brothers Aaron Au Ramirez, 13, and Maximo Au Ramirez, 10. The pair drowned after RCMP said Maximo slipped and fell in fast-moving water and Aaron went in to try and rescue him. Maximo’s body was found July 22, while Aaron’s was found one day later. The upgrades to Sturgeon Falls Trail include fencing installed to prevent access to slippery rock areas, updated signage in the area to warn about slippery or hidden rocks, and the creation of fenced viewing areas. Moyes said the plans have been communicated with stakeholders in the Whiteshell, and that Sturgeon Falls Trail will remain closed until the new upgrades are built. He added the province is reviewing provincial parks to see if there are areas where more safety upgrades are needed.
