Social media was buzzing in North Bay and area after flash floods hit the area Monday night. While the amount of precipitation has yet to be confirmed by Environment Canada, CTV’s 11:30 p.m. newscast warned of heavy rain. On Tuesday, the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority said 40-60 mm of rain fell, causing localized flooding as stormwater systems were overwhelmed. The system was also expected to move through the area very slowly with reduced visibility. There were reports on social media of pooling water in areas. Tuesday, officials in North Bay told CTV North Bay reporter Eric Taschner they are currently monitoring and inspecting areas that may have been damaged. “A significant amount of rain fell over a short period of time, resulting in surface water flooding in some areas, including Lakeshore Drive, Wallace Road and Commerce Court,” the city said. “The intensity and volume of rainfall temporarily exceeded the capacity of parts of the city’s storm sewer system.” “The high volume of water entering the city’s wastewater treatment plant caused the primary treatment tanks to overflow, resulting in a minor spill contained on-site. A bypass of the treatment process was not required.” The city also said it has received reports of sewer backups from some property owners. The full extent of impacts to private property is not known at this time. City crews continue to patrol impacted areas and are completing cleanup as required.
