The Pillars hip hop festival brings break dancing, DJing, MCing to Sherwood Park

Break dancers and DJs from across Canada put their skills on display for The Pillars outdoor hip-hop festival in Sherwood Park over the weekend.

Broadmoor Lake Park in Sherwood Park was filled with hip hop music Sunday as it hosted the Pillars outdoor hip hop festival.

Put on by Street Styles 780 Dance Foundation, the event brought together break dancing, DJing, MCing and aerosol art.

The foundation’s chair Chris Shabbits said the festival offers the opportunity for dancers and artists to show off their skills.

“Something like this gives them a great opportunity to show off their moves that they’ve been practicing throughout the years,” Shabbits told CTV News Edmonton.

The family-friendly event brought participants from at least four provinces and territories as well as hundreds of local families.

“We intentionally hosted this event in Sherwood Park because I don’t think it gets an opportunity to see the hip hop world as much as inner-city Edmonton might have,” said Shabbits.
