If a campfire is part of your weekend plans, you’re in luck. Category 1 campfires will remain permitted across the BC Wildfire Service’s Coastal Fire Centre. The wildfire service says cooler temperatures and wetter weather have reduced overall fire behaviour, with those conditions expected to continue for the next eight to 10 days. As a result, there are currently no plans to reintroduce a regional Category 1 campfire prohibition. The BC Wildfire Service is reminding people that municipalities and First Nations may have their own burning restrictions in place, which take precedence over provincial regulations. Since April 1, crews have responded to 93 wildfires within the Coastal Fire Centre, with 81 of those fires determined to be human-caused. Anyone planning to have a campfire is reminded to keep it no larger than a half-metre by half-metre, never leave it unattended and ensure it is completely extinguished before leaving the site.
