Alberta pilots 120 km/h speed limit

A 22-kilometre section of Highway 2 south of Leduc now has a speed limit of 120 km/h – at least for the summer. The Alberta government says the trial is about improving travel for commuters.

Voter info used inappropriately, election agency alleges

Elections Alberta alleges a separatist group, the Centurion Project, illegally received a list of every registered voter in the province. The Centurion Project says it will obey a court order to remove the information from its website.

The electors list, as it is called, is shared with registered political parties, which don’t fall under Alberta’s main personal information privacy law. Alberta’s privacy commissioner says this means her office may not have jurisdiction over the alleged breach, and that it demonstrates political parties should be made subject to the Personal Information and Privacy Act.

Dennis Okeymow goes on trial

The man accused of selling the gun that a teenage boy would use to kill two Edmonton police officers and injure a Pizza Hut worker in 2023 was on trial this week. Dennis Okeymow pleaded not guilty to three counts of manslaughter in the deaths of the officers and the teen, and pleaded guilty to weapon and drug-trafficking charges. He will receive a verdict at a later date.

His lawyer says he is being used as a scapegoat.

Snowstorm strands hundreds

Hundreds of commuters were stranded on Highway 63 into Fort McMurray for nearly 24 hours when a snowstorm hit last week. Recounting someone in a helicopter delivering Tim Hortons, one stranded commuter called it a “very Canadian” experience.
