Mountie charged with assault in northwest Alberta

An RCMP officer has been charged in relation to a November 2023 incident with assault with a weapon.

An RCMP officer is facing charges following an alleged assault in Valleyview, Alta., in 2023.

In a news release, Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said it was directed to investigate an incident involving a Valleyview RCMP officer that occurred on Nov. 10, 2023.

ASIRT did not provide details on the assault but told CTV News Edmonton the officer was on duty when the offence occurred.

Const. Ovidiu Haynes was arrested on Wednesday and has been charged with assault with a weapon. He has since been released with conditions and is to appear in court on Aug. 26.

CTV News Edmonton has reached out to RCMP to determine the status of the officer’s employment.

Valleyview is about 300 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
