Mark Messier teams up with Budweiser to bring back Edmonton’s ‘City of Champions’ slogan

Mark Messier and Budweiser teamed up to make a commercial celebrating Edmonton's 'City of Champions' heritage.

Hockey legend Mark Messier has joined with Budweiser to bring back Edmonton’s old “City of Champions” slogan.

The brewery has released a new, limited edition Edmonton can with beer brewed at the Labatt brewery in south Edmonton by Edmontonians

A new commercial for the product shows Messier dusting off the old City of Champions sign retired by the city a decade ago.

“I take great pride in having a career that not only inspired others, but also helped shape Edmonton’s identity as the City of Champions,” Messier said in a news release.

“It’s been 35 years since I last raised a cup in my hometown, so collaborating with Budweiser to release this limited-edition can and toast to the community that continues to embody the City of Champions legacy is incredibly special.”

Messier was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in 1979 and remained with the team until 1991.

He was part of all of the Oilers Stanley Cup victories.

He went on to play for the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks before retiring from the NHL in 2005.

“This city knows what it takes to compete at the highest level and the people are an integral part of the energy that takes over Edmonton,” said Messier.

“Win or lose, Edmonton has some of the best fans in the world and we will always be the City of Champions.”
