Edmonton weather: Short-lived cool down ahead of some weekend heat

CTV Edmonton's Cory Edel has an outlook for the rest of the week.

After three straight days above 25 C, we’re in for a slight cool down today and Thursday.

Afternoon highs will be right around 20 C. So... just slightly below the seasonal average of 22 C.

A warming trend begins Friday and we’ll be in the mid to upper 20s for the weekend.

That warming trend turns into a heat streak through next week with a long stretch of days near 30 C.

We started August with back-to-back 30-degree days and it looks like we’ll end the month with some heat.

As for today, we had some thunderstorms push through parts of the Edmonton area overnight (mainly south and eastern parts of the region).

Those showers and thunderstorms are moving through east-central and northeastern Alberta this morning.

It’ll be cloudy with some sunny breaks through the rest of the morning and early afternoon in the city and surrounding areas.

A few clusters of storms are expected to develop over western and central Alberta mid-afternoon. It’s likely that we’ll see some of those storms move into the Edmonton somewhere in the 5-8 p.m. timeframe.

There’s an upper level low making it’s way across the province and that’ll produce some more showers/rain in northeastern Alberta Thursday.

In the Edmonton area, there’s just a slight risk of some spotty showers midday or early in the afternoon Thursday.

Most of the day should be dry.

Once that upper low moves off to the east, we’ll start to see an upper ridge (warm air aloft) building in over B.C. and Alberta for the weekend and next week.

That’ll bring sunny skies to go along with the heat.
