Edmonton weather: Record warmth and then powerful gusts tonight and Thursday

According to Cory Edel's forecast, Edmonton could set a temperature record Wednesday.

Edmonton will take a run at another record high this afternoon. The city hit a record-setting 10.3 C on Monday.

Tuesday’s high of 9.2 C was JUST short of the record of 9.4 C set in 1891.

Fifteen other communities in Alberta DID set records on Tuesday, though.

Today’s record high (Jan. 14) is 8.3 C set in 1942. We should get to 9 or 10 C this afternoon.

Saturday also has a shot at a record. We’ll get to the 6 to 9 C range. The record for Jan. 17 is 8.9 C set in 2009.

After today’s warmth, some powerful (potentially damaging) wind gusts develop this evening and continue overnight and through most of Thursday.

A low-pressure system will move into northern Saskatchewan tonight and on the back side of that system, gusts could hit 50 to 80 km/h across much of central and eastern Alberta with the strongest gusts for Edmonton coming overnight and early Thursday morning.

There’s also a chance of some flurries in east-central and northeastern Alberta overnight. No precipitation is expected in the Edmonton area.

Temperatures will cool a bit over the next few days. Gusty and a high in the 3 to 6 C range Thursday in the city.

Calmer, sunny and a high just slightly above freezing on Friday.

Then...one more really warm day Saturday.

Beyond Saturday, temperatures will stay well above average Sunday-Tuesday.

Daytime highs should get to the 0 to 5 C range.

Looking long range: Colder air still look likely to move in toward the end of next week.

Daytime highs will drop back to the -10 C range by Thursday/Friday and could get even colder after that.
