Edmonton weather: More record highs possible this week

Cory Edel's forecast is showing Edmonton could come close to a temperature record Wednesday and Thursday.

The warm spell will continue all week and after setting a new record high on Monday, Edmonton has a chance to set a few more records in the coming days.

Here’s a look at all the record temperatures from across Alberta on Monday.

Edmonton’s record high for Jan. 13 is 9.4 C back in 1891.

(Interesting side note: That’s exactly the same temperature and year as the Jan. 12 record high and it’s important to note that those temperatures would’ve been manually recorded in the late 1800s and then converted from their original Fahrenheit to Celsius decades later.)

Temperatures hit a high of 10.3 degrees on Monday and although I think we’ll be a degree or three “cooler” today, we’ll be close to the record.

Wednesday looks VERY likely to set a new record high. The Jan. 14 record is 8.3 C (set in 1942).

We’re expecting a strong area of low pressure to move across northern Alberta on Wednesday and that’ll pull some slightly cooler air in behind it for Thursday and (mainly) Friday.

Strong wind will also develop on the back side of that system, and it’ll be a gusty night Wednesday and windy through most of the day Thursday in central and eastern Alberta.

Gusts could be in the 50-80 km/h range in northeastern Alberta.

There’s some uncertainty with exact temperatures as we head into the weekend.

But, Saturday looks like it’ll be warmer than Sunday. At this point, we should be in the 3 to 7 C range for a high Saturday and closer to 0 C for a high Sunday.

Looking long range: The mild temperatures continue into Monday/Tuesday of next week. But, colder air looks set to drop in starting mid to late next week.
