Cold and snow looms for later in the week

We’re in a “lull” period today and Wednesday ahead of a bigger cooldown for the end of the week and a good chance of some accumulating snow on Thursday.

Temperatures will hover right around average with mornings in the -10 C range and afternoon highs around or slightly above zero.

Sure, there’s a slight chance of some fairly insignificant flurries this afternoon and maybe a few flurries Tuesday afternoon/early evening, but, that precip won’t really amount to much (if anything.)

Things get a little more active on Thursday as some colder air starts to drop in. We’ll see daytime highs in the -6 C to -10 C range for Thu/Fri/Sat in the Edmonton area and a good chance of some snow on Thursday.

There’s still some uncertainty with just how much accumulation we’ll get, but 2 to 5 cm looks like a decent estimate as of now.

The heaviest snow will hit western and southern Alberta Thursday with the likelihood that we’ll see snowfall warnings issued for areas around Calgary, the foothills, and southern mountain parks.

Red Deer looks to be on the edge of that heavier snow and could potentially pick up around 10 cm of snow.

So...mild in the short-term, colder for the end of the week (with a good chance of snow Thursday), then...another big warm spell for next week.

Temperatures should climb back close to zero on Sunday and we’ll be a few degrees above zero by Monday afternoon.

The rest of next week should have highs in the 5 C to 10 C range.
