Alberta soon to be flanked by provinces that don’t practise time change

As B.C. gets ready to move clocks ahead for the last time, Premier Danielle Smith says the province will evaluate if a similar change would be best for Alberta.

Alberta will soon be flanked by provinces that keep the time the same all year.

British Columbia’s premier announced Monday that Canada’s most western province will remain on daylight saving time following this Sunday’s spring-forward one hour.

In 2019, more than 90 per cent of people in B.C. supported eliminating the time change.

The province decided at the time to stay aligned with U.S. states to the south.

The move means Alberta’s neighbours to the west (B.C.) and east (Saskatchewan) will stay with the same time year-round. Saskatchewan officially stopped changing its clocks in 1966.

In a statement to CTV News Edmonton on Monday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government will take B.C.’s move under consideration and evaluate if a similar change would be in the best interest of the province.

Alberta held a referendum on time change in 2021, with 50.2-per-cent of voters deciding to keep the clocks moving twice a year.

B.C. Premier David Eby said Monday he hopes B.C.’s American neighbours will join the province in ending the disruptive time changes.
