Newfoundland assesses damage caused by severe storm surges on south shore

PLACENTIA, N.L. - Environment Canada meteorologists are warning of yet another weather system as communities in Newfoundland work to recover from severe storm surges that hammered the island's south coast Friday.

Placentia and number of towns on the Burin and Connaigre peninsulas were battered by Friday's storm, which caused infrastructure damage and flooding.

Officials in Placentia have closed off the town's popular boardwalk to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

Damage has also been reported in St. Jacques-Coomb's Cove on the Connaigre Peninsula as volunteer fire workers try to keep people away from the shoreline.

No injuries have been reported in the region.

Weather scientists at Environment Canada are anticipating that a strong warm front will make its way north across Newfoundland on Sunday.

They predict the island will be covered in snow by Sunday morning, which will change to rain as temperatures rise throughout the day.

Meteorologists say the warm conditions may cause some snow to melt, but the temperatures will plummet again Monday.
