Two charged in $23 M fraud investigation

RCMP Calgary Financial Integrity have charged two people in an alleged multi-million dollar fraud case involving a commercial real estate venture.

RCMP say they have completed an investigation into a commercial real estate venture, operated by Concrete Equities Inc., which raised money from Canadian investors to buy undeveloped beach properties in Senora, Mexico, called the El Golfo de Santa Clara Project.

Investigators say that the funds were raised through Offering Memorandums and were RRSP eligible and that the company and all of its related corporations went into receivership in 2009.

David Nelson Humeniuk and Varun Aurora are alleged to have provided false information to investors, diverted funds to other business ventures outside of the investment agreement and stole investors funds between June 4, 2007 and May 13, 2009.

Humeniuk is also charged with one count of theft and money laundering for allegedly taking $1M of investors’ funds for personal use.

Aurora and Humeniuk are also charged with three counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of theft over $5,000.  Humeniuk is also charged with theft over $5,000 and one count of money laundering.

Humeniuk, of St. Albert, has been arrested and released and is scheduled to appear in Calgary Provincial Court on February 27th, 2014.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of Varun (AKA Vinny) Aurora.

Police say the loss to investors as a result of this fraud and theft exceeds $23 million.
