‘Strong demand’: Bearspaw Golf Course announces plans to go fully private in 2026

A Calgary golf course that was on the verge of bankruptcy just six years ago has announced plans to go fully private next year.

The change at Bearspaw Golf Club will take place on Jan. 1, 2026.

The course was facing significant financial challenges in 2019, ceasing operations and going into financial receivership.

However, the course was bought and reopened under new ownership in 2020.

General manager Richard Creally says since then, the course has welcomed a wave of new members, including many families from Calgary and the surrounding area.

He says the transition to fully private balances member interest with a commitment to preserving tee time availability.

“Going fully private reflects not only our original vision, but the incredible momentum we’ve built in recent years,” he said. “The strong demand from new and returning members reinforces our belief that Bearspaw offers something truly special—an exceptional golf experience in a setting that feels both elevated and welcoming.”

The move will see Bearspaw introduce a waitlist for new members and increase its one-time initiation fee from $40,000 to $50,000, effective Aug. 15.

Officials say they’re also working with Alberta golf architect Wade Horrocks to develop a golf course master plan.

“Bearspaw’s story is one of resilience and reinvention,” said Andrew Melton, chairman of the board. “This next chapter is about preserving that momentum, delivering even more for our members and fulfilling our commitment.”
