Stavely, Alta., woman charged after border services officers seize drugs from luggage

Border service officers seized 4.5 kilos of cannabis from a woman's luggage at Calgary International Airport on Aug. 7.

A Stavely, Alta., resident faces charges after Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers seized 4.5 kilos of cannabis in some luggage.

On Aug. 7, officers at the Calgary International Airport were conducting outbound exams when they intercepted luggage they say had been flagged for abnormalities.

Inside, they discovered the 4.5 kilos of cannabis.

The traveller was arrested by the CBSA, who say a further search of her carry-on luggage led to the seizure of 5.2 grams of fentanyl, 2.1 grams of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

A criminal investigation was launched involving the RCMP, Calgary police and the Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET).

A 46-year-old woman has been charged with possession for the purpose of exporting contrary to section 11(2) of the Cannabis Act, possession for the purpose of distributing contrary to section 9(2) of the Cannabis Act; and attempting to export goods that are prohibited, controlled or regulated contrary to section 160 of the Customs Act.

The woman is scheduled to appear in court in Calgary on Sept. 19.
