Spontaneous two-step at Calgary Stampede captures hearts online

It's a spontaneous moment capturing hearts online—a Calgary couple caught dancing in the rain during Stampede without realizing they were being filmed.

A rainstorm didn’t stop Benjamin McMurray and Sarah MacDougall from dancing at the Calgary Stampede — it set the stage for one of the most heartwarming moments of this year’s festivities.

A now-viral video shows the couple two-stepping outside the Nashville North tent on Sunday night, twirling through puddles and performing impressive tricks as the rain poured down.

They didn’t even know anyone was filming.

“We just decided to embrace it,” MacDougall said. “I think I said, ‘we should dance in that puddle.’ And so we just started doing it, and we started doing the moves he taught me earlier.”

McMurray said the downpour actually helped.

“Nothing clears out a dance floor like a good rainstorm,” he said. “It actually worked out perfectly. We had lots of room to dance and just kind of practice our moves. Believe it or not, this is actually our first rodeo together.”

The couple had originally stepped outside the tent to cool off after taking in the Sunday rodeo. When the music kept playing and the rain came down, they didn’t hesitate.

“We were already out there, it was coming down,” MacDougall said. “It was spontaneous.”

As of Friday morning, the video has been viewed more than 800,000 times on social media— with countless comments applauding their chemistry and joy.

“It’s crazy,” McMurray said.

“We didn’t know anybody was filming, or else we probably would have cleaned it up a little bit. But it’s a crazy feeling, so many positive comments about it too, and I think that’s probably the coolest part.”

MacDougall said she had no idea the clip would go viral.

“I keep seeing the views go up and up and up,” she said. “It’s wild.”

The couple met just a few months ago through mutual friends while heading to Ghost Lake.

“She was crazy enough to jump on the back of the Harley and come out with me,” McMurray said.

“So I threw her in the lake, and she wasn’t sick of me then, so we just kind of kept seeing each other.”

McMurray, who grew up on a ranch east of Airdrie, says he picked up his dance skills from years of attending small-town rodeos.

“If you can’t buy a girl a drink, you better know how to dance,” he joked.

For both of them, the experience was about more than just going viral — it was a reminder of what Stampede is all about.

“I love that everybody dresses country and gets out, and everyone’s in a good mood, and people are dancing,” MacDougall said.

“It’s a really good time.”

McMurray added, “Looking back at that moment in particular, you know — life is not always purely sunshine. So if you can find those people that are willing to dance through the rain with you, keep those people around. They’re going to help you through life.”
