Calgary police say six teenagers have been charged in connection with a brutal assault that took place in Auburn Bay last month. Police were called to a home in the southeast community on May 7 for reports of a teen in medical distress. Officers who arrived on scene found a 17-year-old boy suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and has since been released. Investigators believe before the assault, the boy was confronted by a group of seven other teens in an alley behind the home. A physical altercation ensued and the boy was bear sprayed and stabbed. Police say two suspects were taken into police custody less than an hour after the assault. A further review of surveillance footage and witness statements has allowed investigators to identify four other suspects, who have all since been taken into custody. In total, four 14-year-old boys and two 15-year-old boys have been charged each with one count of aggravated assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of disguise with intent. Calgary police said violence of this kind involving teenagers is “deeply concerning.” “We are grateful to the witnesses and community members who came forward with information. Their assistance was instrumental in helping us identify and charge the teens involved in this senseless attack,” said Insp. Darry Midtdal. None of the accused may be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They are next scheduled to appear in court on July 21.
