Roads in Calgary treacherous as winter weather returns

Some places in Calgary could see up to 25 centimetres of snow into Thursday. Roads could be tricky to navigate in the morning.

Emergency crews responded to several crashes on Wednesday night as Old Man Winter returned to Calgary and brought icy conditions to many roads.

Environment Canada had issued a yellow snowfall warning for Calgary and much of southern Alberta, warning that 10 to 20 centimetres of snow is expected for the city.

In Calgary’s city limits, overpasses, exit ramps and bridges were especially treacherous for drivers.

That was the case for several people travelling north on Deerfoot Trail near Glenmore Trail in Calgary’s southeast just before 9 p.m.

Calgary police said up to a dozen vehicles had collided and several people had minor injuries.

Officers remained on the scene Wednesday in the northbound lane of Deerfoot Trail, which was closed at Glenmore Trail.

Traffic was rerouted east and west, police said.

Other collisions in the southeast

YYC Transportation showed several instances of crashes in the city’s southeast.

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, no serious injuries had been reported.

Authorities are advising people to stay home or to expect delays when travelling.

The city says crews are on the road attending to trouble spots.
