No. 2 priority: MRU researchers asking for help with elk study

In the name of science, Mount Royal University researchers are asking you to do them a solid.

You can assist them in tracking the migratory movements of elk — by alerting them to the bowel movements of said elk.

Any naturally shed elk hair you come across is useful, too.

Researchers can be called on to come and pick up the stuff.

Or, you can; the researchers will provide collection kits and instructions.

“These samples contain genetic material — DNA,” said Levi Newediuk, an assistant professor in MRU’s biology department.

“By sampling DNA from many elk, we can identify which individuals and herds are related,” he said.

“This will help us better understand how far elk move and how herds are connected across the landscape, supporting strategies to improve co-existence with elk in southern Alberta.”

All landowners, ranchers, land stewards and knowledge holders are encouraged to help.
