Millican Ogden celebrates 70 years in Calgary on Neighbour Day this Saturday

Neighbour Day is approaching, and the annual civic celebration will be extra special for the community of Millican Ogden this year, which is celebrating 70 years in Calgary.

Neighbour Day is a citywide celebration inspired by the way citizens came together after the historic flooding that devastated Calgary back in 2013.

Now, every June, Calgarians are encouraged to celebrate their community.

“Neighbour Day is about showing up for one another and taking pride in the places we live,” said Mayor Jeromy Farkas. “I encourage everyone to join in and celebrate what makes their neighbourhood special.”

The event will be held on Saturday.

Calgarians can participate by planning a block party, BBQ or neighbourhood gathering.

This year marks the second time that microgrants were available to fund neighbourhood events.

The city says 54 microgrants have been awarded, including one for the Millican Ogden Community Association.

“Celebrating 70 years in our community on Neighbour Day is really meaningful for us,” said spokesperson Lorraine Robinson. “With support from the #YYCNeighbourDay microgrant, we’re able to include Indigenous dancers accompanied by a drummer. There will also be historical horse wagon tours with a local historian guide and, thanks to the Calgary Fire Department, an antique fire truck for people to explore.

“It’s a great way to create a welcoming experience for everyone!”
