Feds fund universities to study genomes to help accelerate economic development

The federal government is partnering with Canadian universities to use genomic technology to help accelerate economic activity across the country.

The federal government is giving universities $20 million to study genomes, including the University of Calgary.

The cash will help accelerate genomic technology in health, agrifood, natural resources and manufacturing.

It’s hoped it will attract private investment to help bring new products to market.

Specific projects range from making canola crops more drought-resistant to developing new treatments for cancer.

Across Canada, there will be a total of 33 new research and development projects.
