The Township of Ramara is now making sandbags and sand available to residents, however, it may be a little late for some homeowners. Previously, sandbags were not distributed by the township unless a municipal emergency had been declared. However, at a special meeting of council held today saw council delegating authority to the Fire Chief and to the general manager of development and infrastructure to determine if sandbags could be distributed within Ramara. “Council’s decision ensures the township can respond quickly and provide residents with access to sandbags at the discretion of the Fire Chief and (staff) where they are needed even when the threshold for an emergency declaration hasn’t been met,” said Mayor Basil Clarke. “We know that for some residents, impacts have already occurred, and we understand how difficult that is. While these measures will not undo what has already happened, they can help protect properties in areas still at risk,” Clarke said. Sandbags and sand are available at the following locations: Yard 3 – 7305 County Rd. 169 Longford Mills Community Centre – 3854 Longford Mills Rd. Bluebird Park – 6316 Bluebird St. Residents need to bring their own shovel and be prepared to fill bags and load them into their vehicle. Township staff and emergency services continue to monitor water levels and respond to impacts across Ramara, including areas such as Lake St. John where levels remain elevated and may continue to fluctuate in the coming days. “Flooding is unfortunately a seasonal reality, particularly for those living near waterways where water levels can fluctuate year to year,” said Fire Chief Tony Stong. “We encourage residents to take steps to reduce risk over the long term, such as improving drainage, using appropriate barriers to mitigate potential flooding, preparing their property ahead of spring conditions and reviewing their insurance to understand their coverage.” Flood Safety Reminders: If your home has experienced flooding, avoid entering areas where water may be in contact with electrical outlets, appliances, or panels Do not enter a flooded basement if electricity may still be on Contact your utility provider if you need to safely disconnect power or gas Protect your well from flood water
