While FIFA World Cup matches will be played in Toronto and Vancouver, Calgary is planning local events to bring fans together, including outdoor watch parties and free sports clinics. The city says public spaces will be activated through initiatives like the SURGE CITY Hoops Summer Series, Soccer City FC and World Cup watch parties in partnership with local organizations. “Free, accessible recreation helps activate downtown and brings people into our public spaces,” said Thom Mahler, director of downtown strategy with the City of Calgary. Watch parties for Team Canada games are scheduled for June 12, 18 and 24 at Eau Claire Plaza, with the final set for July 19 on Stephen Avenue. The summer lineup also includes basketball and soccer programs for youth aged eight to 17, running at locations across the downtown.
