The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are praising a Good Samaritan who rescued a driver trapped inside a vehicle that had flipped over into Guelph Lake. The vehicle was travelling southbound on Wellington Road 29 when the driver lost control during a storm on Sunday night. Police said the vehicle went off the road and ended up on its roof in a marshy area in Guelph Lake. The driver remained trapped inside while water rapidly filled the vehicle. Police said a bystander who witnessed the crash entered the water and risked their own safety to rescue the driver. They cut the driver’s seatbelt, freed them from the overturned vehicle and helped them to shore. Police said the bystander saved the driver’s life. “On behalf of the Wellington OPP, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to this local hero,” they wrote in a social media post. “Their courage, selflessness and quick thinking saved a life and serves as an example of the strength and compassion found within our community.” Police said a 54-year-old was charged with making an unsafe move. “Drivers are reminded to adjust their driving to road and weather conditions, and to follow all traffic and road signs to help ensure everyone’s safety on our roadways,” they wrote.
