Calgarians have a chance to weigh in on a proposed increase to their natural gas bills. The city put up a public notice about its plans to update the franchise fee rate. Right now, the monthly fee is based on a fixed rate of just over $3 per gigajoule of gas used. In January, the city wants to increase that to more than $5 per gigajoule, which would mean an extra $2.45 per month on every Calgarian’s gas bill. The city says the money goes towards its operating budget and funding services Calgarians rely on. Calgarians have until Aug. 25 to share their thoughts, through the city’s website. The feedback will be part of the application to the Alberta Utilities Commission, which has final say on the proposed change.
