A man fishing in the Red River on Thursday ended up hooking a grenade, prompting a call to RCMP. Selkirk RCMP said they were notified at 3:05 p.m. Thursday that a possible grenade had been located at the Waterfront in Selkirk, located along the Red River. Officers who attended the scene learned a man who had been fishing had hooked the grenade and pulled it out of the water. Manitoba RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit was called in, and members of the Canadian Armed Forces also attended the scene. Personnel from 17 Wing’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight examined the item and determined it was a training grenade from the 1950s. It had no safety pin attached and was deemed safe to be moved for disposal, Mounties said. Manitoba RCMP is reminding the public that anyone who finds an object that appears to be an explosive device should not touch, move or disturb it. Instead, people are told to leave the area, go to a safe location and contact police immediately.
