A long-standing Kitchener bowling alley has officially rolled back into business after being saved from permanent closure by a pair of local regulars. Frederick Lanes, formerly known as AMF Frederick Lanes, celebrated its official grand reopening on Friday afternoon, welcoming a packed house of bowlers following months of community-driven renovations. The venue was slated to close for good in May, sparking widespread disappointment across the local bowling community. Refusing to let the neighbourhood staple disappear, regular bowlers Kassandra Ahlin and Mason Tikl stepped in to purchase the business. The official reopening kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Within hours, nearly every lane was occupied by a mix of long-time league members and first-time visitors. “They made a lot of improvements and this place is starting to fill up,” said Mike Stotts, a local bowler who attended opening day. “People in my party here have been bowling here for up to 40 years, and we’re glad it has reopened.” The transformation was made possible largely through grassroots support from the local bowling community. Volunteers and local tradespeople pitched in to repair plumbing, complete carpentry work, and overhaul the interior—often donating their time or slashing service costs to help bring the venue back to life. “Really retro kind of nostalgia vibes and it’s really fun,” said Molly Wildon on opening day. Ahead of Friday’s launch, Ahlin and Tikl spearheaded extensive repairs to modernize the facility while preserving its nostalgic charm. Updates included replacing old ceiling tiles, upgrading the arcade with new pinball and retro games, and refreshing the building’s overall look. “I walked in the building and the smell, it feels like home,” Ahlin said prior to the opening. “We’re really hoping that this will continue to be that sort of space where people can come no matter what age or ability level and just have a good time.” Patrons relieved that the community hub was spared from closure. “We’re really happy that he saved the bowling place,” said Wildon. Frederick Lanes will operate daily until 11 p.m., welcoming bowlers of all ages and skill levels.
