Ontario Provincial Police say the province’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate following a fatal shooting in Brockville, Ont. According to the OPP, officers with the East Region Tactics and Rescue Unit were assisting the Brockville Police Service in the execution of a search warrant at a home in Brockville at around 8 p.m. Thursday, when an individual was shot. “During the interaction, police discharged their firearm. One individual was transported to the hospital where they were pronounced deceased,” the OPP said in a news release on Friday. The OPP notified the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which it says has invoked its mandate. No other information was provided by the OPP. The SIU has not yet released any details. The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
