Edmonton’s mayor is offering his condolences to the friends and family of a man killed while protecting his business. “On behalf of Edmonton city council and the people of Edmonton, I offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sukhjit Randhawa. The tragic loss of Mr. Randhawa while he was at work on Aug. 5 is a profound tragedy, and our hearts are with everyone navigating unimaginable grief,” Andrew Knack wrote in a statement on Friday. “Senseless acts of violence like this impact the entire fabric of our community. Every Edmontonian deserves to feel secure in our city, and no one should ever face danger while performing their duties and serving our community.” CTV News Edmonton obtained security camera footage of an assault in a north-central Edmonton liquor store. Forty-eight-year-old Sukhjit Randhawa, who friends called Sunny, died in hospital of his injuries. Nicholas Butler-Chowace, 22, has been charged with second-degree murder in Randhawa’s death. Court records show he’s previously faced multiple theft and assault charges. A nearby business owner says violence towards businesses in the area is common and something needs to change. “Where is the safety aspect? What are we doing here? What are the assurances that this will not happen again?” Ravi Prakash asked on Thursday. “This is the very blunt question I want to ask the city and Edmonton police, what is going on guys?” A memorial service for Randhawa is scheduled for Wednesday.
