Some members of city council want to see more Calgary intersections with advance signals for pedestrians. ‘Leading pedestrian interval timing’ means the walk signal starts up to seven seconds before drivers get the green light. It allows people to move further across the road before vehicles start turning. Currently 53 intersections have it and one councillor says the simple solution reduces the number of pedestrians getting hit, up by 20 per cent. A notice of motion is calling for the advance signal to be expanded to every high-collision intersection, school zones, and transit-adjacent intersections. It’s calling for the changes to happen within two years. The notice of motion will be discussed at Tuesday’s executive committee. If passed, it will go before city council on Sept. 22.
