Ontario Provincial Police are issuing a stern warning as the Labour Day weekend gets underway. They are encouraging drivers, boaters, and those riding ATVs to make sound decisions. “If you’re impaired, don’t drive, boat, ride or operate any vehicle,” Sgt. Ed Sanchuck of West Region OPP posted on social media Saturday. “Officers will be conducting heightened enforcement focused on impaired driving as part of the Labor Day long weekend campaign. Alcohol and drug impairment continue to be major contributors to fatal collisions across Ontario. Tragically, many of those deaths were entirely preventable.” This message was also targeted to those on trails and waterways. “Many people mistakenly believe operating a boat or ATV, while impaired, is less dangerous than driving a vehicle,” Sanchuk added. “The reality is that impairment significantly reduces reaction time, judgment, balance, and coordination in every environment.” OPP will be conducting marine patrols throughout the weekend to ensure people have required safety equipment, life jackets and floatation devices. “Never operate an ATV or side by side while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Avoid carrying passengers illegally and always wear a helmet.” He also stressed arranging a designated driver, or sober boat operator. “One poor decision can have irreversible consequences. Every impaired driving offense prevented has the potential to save a life,” said Sanchuk.
