Amer Didic broke a tie with a late goal in stoppage time, as Cavalry FC stole a 2-1 win over FC Supra Tuesday night at ATCO Field. Supra, trying frantically to make up some ground in their chase for a playoff spot, had a brilliant chance right as stoppage time was expiring, but Cavalry goalkeeper Joseph Holliday dove to the corner, fully extending his body to stop a header from Matisse Chretien finding the corner of the net. The win kept Cavalry within four points of first-place Forge FC. FC Supra remain six points back of the final playoff spot, currently occupied by the Halifax Wanderers. “We played our best match of the season,” said FC Supra coach Nick Razzaghi. “I think we were excellent, even though the final result is disappointing. We defended very well and even when Cavalry had the ball, they were not that dangerous. It’s really unfortunate, but I’m proud of the guys.” Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. conceded that the club didn’t have its best night, but was good enough to find a way to get a win. “Was it perfect? No. But was it full of character, a good mindset and a refusal to lose? Absolutely,” said Wheeldon. Nathaniel Edwards opened the scoring for Cavalry in the first half and that held until the 55th minute, when Keesean Ferdinand deflected a ball into the net off his chest to knot the score at one apiece. That set the stage for Didic’s game-winning goal in stoppage time. Next up for Cavalry is a Saturday night date with Inter Toronto at ATCO Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
