Brief warmup Friday with more snow starting Saturday night

Warm and melty for Calgary on Friday. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Typical of spring, there is very little consistency in the forecast this week with large temperature swings day-over-day and periods of heavy, wet snow.

Friday will be one of the better days with a daytime high of 7 C, which is slightly warmer than average. The day will include a mix of sun and cloud and moderate west and southwest winds, both of which will help with melting.

Water will likely pool along the shoulders on some roads and near storm drains, also at the base of any slope or under downspouts and in places like parking lots.

Some of that water will turn to ice early Saturday as Calgary heads into another temperature swing.

Daytime highs will max out around -3 C and -4 C from Saturday until Monday with lows between -7 C and -12 C.

The normal range in Calgary this time of year is 6 C for daytime highs and -6 C for the daily low.

Road conditions across the region have improved significantly with 511 Alberta reporting mostly dry road conditions as of 6:30 a.m.

As of 7 a.m. major routes in Calgary were also mostly dry and clear, with secondary routes, side streets and back alleys still snow-covered.

More snow is expected across to track across the Rockies into southern Alberta starting Saturday night with intermittent periods of snow expected to last until Monday.

As of 7 a.m. Friday, Avalanche Canada was reporting improved conditions across the Rocky Mountains, with some areas in southern B.C. listed as low-risk.

Areas west of Calgary were rated as a moderate to considerable risk.

Daytime highs in Calgary will rise above freezing again starting Monday, but still remain slightly below seasonal.
