Arrest in bar fight death

An autopsy is expected to be conducted on the body of a man known by area residents as 'Brian' who died of his injuries sustained outside the Swigs Pub on early Sunday morning.

Calgary police have arrested a 27-year-old man and are questioning him about a bar fight that left 41-year-old Brian Ludwig dead.

It happened just before 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning in the parking lot of Swigs neighbourhood pub in the community of Cedarbrae.

Witnesses say Ludwig was punched hard in the head just once, and then collapsed unconscious onto the pavement.

Emergency crews transported Ludwig to the hospital, but he died shortly after arrival.

Friends say he was married with children.

Swigs pub has issued a statement extending thoughts and prayers to Ludwig's family and friends:

“Swigs is deeply saddened by the events of Saturday night. What began as a great day on our annual golf tournament turned into an awful tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian's family and friends.”

Tournament participants were enjoying some drinks back at the pub when things turned tragic.

People who live and work in the are also shocked. “It’s really sad, and I feel like you don't feel safe in the neighbourhood, but I hope this is one time only. We love doing business with the community, and people in this community are really very nice.”

Investigators are now waiting for the results of an autopsy which was being conducted late today. They hope it will tell them exactly how Ludwig died, and whether, as witnesses suggest, the death followed a single punch.
