Arizona-bound WestJet flight returns to Vancouver due to ‘mechanical issue’

Some WestJet passengers headed from Vancouver to Phoenix this afternoon had a turbulent ride after the plane was forced to turn around mid-flight.

A WestJet flight on the way to Phoenix, Arizona had to turn around and return to Vancouver International Airport Friday afternoon due to a “mechanical issue” with the aircraft, according to the airline.

Passengers told CTV News there was an issue with one of the plane’s tires during takeoff, but WestJet has not confirmed that detail.

YVR said the aircraft landed safely and emergency vehicles were on the tarmac as passengers deplaned “out of an abundance of caution.”

The incident did not impact departures or arrivals at the airport.

WestJet says the plane will be taken to a hangar for inspection and repair.
