40 new Canadian citizens sworn in at Stampede grounds ceremony

Dozens took the oath of citizenship Friday at the Calgary Stampede.

The Calgary Stampede served as a backdrop for more than three dozen people becoming new Canadian citizens on Friday morning.

Forty people raised their hands and took the oath at Doherty Hall on the Stampede grounds.

That act brought their journeys to become Canadian citizens to long-awaited ends.

Anuj Sharma, who took the oath with his son, Japish, said both were “so excited.”

He said “equal opportunity, safety and futures for my kids” brought him and his family to Canada.

“And Canada welcomed us,” he said. “(Canada) gave me an opportunity to work and contribute to the community.

“We’re very proud to be Canadian citizens today.”

Sharma’s son is young enough that the desire to become a Canadian citizen is all he’s ever really known.

“Today was a very big day for our family—and me,” his son said.

“This has always been a dream for me.”

Guillaume and Louisa have been working toward becoming Canadian citizens for the past nine years.

It finally happened on Friday, and Guillaume said that “was awesome.”

“It was really emotional,” Guillaume said. “We were surrounded by 38 other people, enjoying the moment.

“It was a moment to share.”

The couple said that moment happening during the Stampede, and on the Stampede grounds, no less, was a surprise.

But they’re happy it worked out that way.

“It was a day that we hoped for, and now that it’s happening, it’s really great,” Louisa said.

“We’re really happy to be Canadian.”

Fittingly, also among those taking the oath at Doherty Hall on Friday were Joel and Tammy Cowley.

The former happens to be the Stampede’s chief executive officer.

“Obviously, it’s very emotional and very meaningful, but to do it during the Calgary Stampede is truly special,” Joel Cowley said.

He said Canada itself is also “truly special” and “founded on kindness and civility.”

“We love that,” he said.
